5G is here, what is 5G?
AT&T announces that it will launch 5G network in 12 U.S. cities, making it the first carrier to launch a commercial 5G network in the country.
Customers from Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Antonio, and Waco can experience the 5G network beginning this Friday, when AT&T will distribute a 5G-enabled Netgear Mobile Hotspot device to select customers in these 12 cities. The 5G Mobile Hotspot is launched at the same time as the announcement, and is the first 5G device available on market. During the launching period, AT&T will not charge customers for the device; the company will begin selling the device in the spring of 2019 for $499.
During the announcement, AT&T also rolls out a data plan for its 5G network- a 15GB plan which costs $70 per month. It also suggests that future 5G devices will also use dedicated 5G plans to achieve the speed offered by 5G network.
AT&T suggests that it will expand its 5G coverage to more populated cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, and San Jose.
